“And we, who have always thought of joy
as rising, would feel the emotion
that almost amazes us
when a happy thing falls.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, Duino Elegies: The Tenth Elegy
Born in Buôn Ma Thuột, in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, Trương Minh Quý lives and works here and there, among memories and present moments. His films occupy the shifting ground between documentary and fiction, intimacy and distance. Emerging from the landscapes of his homeland, childhood recollections, and the historical traces carried by Vietnam, they have been presented at Cannes, Locarno, Berlinale, New York, Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen, Rotterdam, and elsewhere.
With The See of Sadness, Trương Minh Quý moves from cinema into the exhibition space for the first time. Installation and moving image become a place in which memory may gather without settling into a single account.
