Organized by Wiking Salon and Galerie BAO, “Entrusting to Emptiness” (Kỳ Thác Hư Không) is a duo exhibition featuring more than 25 works by artists Tôn Thất Minh Nhật and Tuyền Nguyễn. These series of silk and lacquer paintings make up two different segments of the exhibition, where the audience will find themselves following the traces of movement, memory and heritage.

Tuyền Nguyễn’s In Fluctuance (Chênh Vênh) introduces visitors to a series of double-sided silk paintings that fill the space with a delicate interplay of softness and solidity. With flowing colors and gentle yet deliberate brushstrokes, the works evoke dreamlike silhouettes of human figures navigating emotional states. These figures fade into the realm of past memories, embodying the transient and elusive nature of dreams. The dynamic movements within the paintings reflect the hazy space between being half-awake and half-asleep, where memories and illusions linger in the mind.

In contrast, the lacquer paintings of Tôn Thất Minh Nhật create a world inspired by the traditional architecture of temples, communal houses, and royal structures. His methodical layering of lacquer produces depth and frames that draw viewers into the compositions. The works evoke the illusion of looking through windows or gazing into serene ponds. The confined movements within these “frames” mirror the cyclical rhythms of nature, portraying scenes of sunny and rainy seasons, sunsets, and moonlit nights illuminated by lanterns.

Together, these two bodies of work juxtapose fragility and translucence with solidity and reflection, like yin and yang coexisting in harmony. While Tuyền Nguyễn’s paintings flow freely, embracing impermanence, Tôn Thất Minh Nhật’s works embody permanence and introspection.
